Clinical Characteristics of Premature Ovarian Failure according to the Amenorrhea Pattern

Abstract
Objectives: To compare and analysis clinical manifestations and characteristics of the patients according to amenorrhea pattern in Korean premature ovarian failure women.

Methods: A total of 37 cases at the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Asan Medical Center, Korea from 1998 to 2006 that were diagnosed as premature ovarian failure were included in this study. The cases were divided into 2 main groups; a primary amenorrhea group and a secondary amenorrhea group.

Results: The number of primary amenorrhea was 13 (35.1%) and that of secondary amenorrhea was 27 (64.97%). The mean age and Body mass index were not different between the two groups. Breast budding and pubic hair growth is more developed in secondary amenorrhea group. The lutenizing hormone, follicle development hormone and Estradiol were in the same range. Bone marrow density of the lumbar vertebrae was higher in secondary amenorrhea group (0.81¡¾0.7 g/cm2 vs 0.81¡¾0.7 g/cm2). The chromosomal anomaly were 10 cases and the rate of chromosomal anomaly was higher in a primary amenorrhea group (38.5% vs 20.5%).

Conclusion: The rate of chromosomal anomaly was higher and Bone marrow density of the lumbar vertebrae was lower in a primary amenorrhea group comparing a secondary amenorrhea group. The secondary sexual characteristics was a more developed stage in secondary amenorrhea group.
